Kerley Arms (shield)

In heraldic language, the ARMS (shield) is:

"Gules, two bars or, in chief three keys argent."

Which means:

"Red; two horizontal bands of gold;
in the upper third, three keys of silver."

[artistic interpretation by Amy White]

Documentation for the Kerley Coat of Arms can be found in Burke's General Armory. A motto was not recorded with the Kerley Coat of Arms.

"Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were occupation, location, father's name, and personal characteristics.

"The surname Kerley appears to be locational in origin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning, "one who came from or lived near Kirkley, a township in Northumberland." The most prominent variations of Kerley are Kerle, Kerrl, M'Kerlie, Kirley, McKerlie, Kirly, Kirkley and Kirtley.

"Census records available disclose the fact there are approximately 1025 heads of households in the United States with the old and distinguished Kerley name. The United States Census Bureau estimates there are approximately 3.2 persons per household in America today, which yields an approximate total of potentially 3280 people in the United States carrying the Kerley name."
