Etheldred Jones
[pronounced ETH-ull-dredd] - Often called just Dred

Hunter Publishing Company of Winston-Salem NCThe Etheldred Jones homeplace in southern Wake County was built around 1780 on land which was acquired through a grant from the State of North Carolina.
A captain in the Revolutionary War, Etheldred (Dred) Jones was the son of Philip Jones of Edgecombe County NC and the grandson of Henry Jones, whose will was probated in Northampton County NC on November 14, 1733.
Etheldred Jones entered land grant requests in 1778 for two tracts "on both sides of Terrible Creek" in Wake County. By 1800, Jones had accumulated 7849 acres in the vicinity of Fuquay-Varina.
Captain Jones' place was a "Muster Ground" during the Revolutionary War.
Etheldred married Jean (Jane) Lane, daughter of Barnabas Lane of Halifax NC. Jane's parents died when she was young, and she was reared by her father's brother, Joel Lane of Raleigh.

Etheldred died October 2, 1835, at the age of 86. He is buried in a small family cemetery near the house that he built. On his tombstone is inscribed: "Fought under the command of Gen. Green at the battles of Cowpens and Guildford Courthouse."
