Male menopause, or Andropause

If you are married, your husband inevitably has to deal with the changes in your personality which occur during each the month because of hormonal fluctuations. Some women have an extremely hard time during pregnancy, and many have postpartum depression or "the baby blues" which can last from a few weeks to a year, or in some cases never quite goes away. If you experience pre-menstrual mood swings and have difficult menses with physical discomfort such as uterine cramps or bloating, then your husband knows there are days when you are not easy to get along with, and "bitchy" is usually an accurate description of your attitude.

Menopause can be especially hard to deal with, partly because it's not "expected" the way a period or a baby is. You might not realize your hormones are re-balancing until your periods start being unpredictable, and by then you might have had severe emotional distress but you couldn't figure out why. The first hot flash can be very frightening if you don't expect it and is never comfortable, although some women think of it as a Power Surge rather than as an internal thermostat re-setting itself. Your husband can be sympathetic and generally very understanding, but the Change of Life can often seem like a Change of Wife. Unfortunately, sometimes the marriage dissolves during all the turmoil.

My husband has searched for websites which give helpful advice and insight for the husband of a menopausal woman. He found mostly stupid jokes about men and comments from some women [liberated???] who rejoice that men feel uncomfortable around bitchy and "cold" women. Try it yourself: do a search for "menopause" and then search those pages for the word "husband." The Fifty Jokes About Men are all over the place, but there's precious little REAL advice for husbands who care very much about their wives and the physical and emotional distress that this change of life often produces.

I've looked for sites with some kind of positive information for husbands and I couldn't find very much. Most of the ones I did find are about Male Menopause and Impotence, and I've included links to several of them.

If you know of any sites which offer good advice or counsel for husbands,
or if you can offer some helpful comments of your own,
please
send e-mail so I can include them.
